UNIHIKER K10 — A New Step in Educational Robotics A modern AI-powered alternative to Micro:bit

News

Today, I want to share my impressions of the new educational solution from DFRobot — the UNIHIKER K10 board.
This is not just another microcontroller platform — it’s a genuine step forward in the evolution of educational robotics.

For many years, the BBC Micro:bit has been the standard tool for teaching children programming and building simple robots. However, time moves on, technologies advance, and Micro:bit no longer meets modern classroom demands — it lacks power, a modern display, and new features.

That’s where UNIHIKER K10 enters the stage — a next-generation AI board fully compatible with most Micro:bit-based educational kits but offering vastly expanded functionality.

Key Features of UNIHIKER K10

The UNIHIKER K10 is an Artificial Intelligence Coding Board designed for K–12 students and STEM beginners.
It integrates several cutting-edge technologies:

  • Computer Vision

  • Offline Speech Recognition

  • Onboard Machine Learning (TinyML)

And the best part — it can operate completely autonomously.

Unlike Micro:bit, UNIHIKER includes a built-in color display, multiple microphones, an AI camera, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules.
This makes it an incredibly versatile tool for building robots, intelligent devices, and interactive educational projects.

Camera and Image Recognition

One of the most impressive features of the UNIHIKER K10 is its built-in AI camera, which supports:

  • Face Detection

  • Cat/Dog Detection

  • Motion Detection

  • QR Code Recognition

While the camera’s capabilities are not as advanced as those of the well-known HuskyLens (now in its second generation), it remains an excellent, affordable, and functional tool for educational purposes.

Voice Recognition

The UNIHIKER K10 features two built-in microphones that allow it to recognize voice commands in English.
The activation phrase is “Hi, Telly!”, after which the board listens for and executes predefined commands.

This feature is perfect for creating voice-controlled robots and interactive classroom demonstrations.

Hardware Capabilities

The UNIHIKER K10 includes a wide range of built-in sensors and components:

  • Display for graphics, text, and data visualization

  • Light sensor

  • Temperature and humidity sensor

  • Accelerometer

  • RGB LEDs

  • Built-in speaker

  • MicroSD card slot

  • Menu control buttons

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

Thanks to this set of onboard modules, the board can serve as the foundation for both simple classroom demonstrations and advanced engineering projects.

Programming and Compatibility

The UNIHIKER K10 fully supports the Mind+ environment, enabling block-based coding (similar to Scratch), as well as Arduino IDE for advanced users who prefer C programming.

Through TinyML, students can train the board to recognize custom objects — introducing them to the real-world applications of machine learning in education.

In the Learning Process

The UNIHIKER K10 is an excellent choice for courses in:

  • Robotics

  • Programming

  • Artificial Intelligence

  • STEM and IoT

It helps students explore key concepts such as:

  • How artificial intelligence works

  • The basics of computer vision

  • Sound processing and recognition

  • Sensor and motor programming

The board also integrates seamlessly with the Maqueen V3 — the updated version of the popular educational robot, now equipped with a Lidar distance sensor instead of the traditional ultrasonic one.

Together, they create a powerful and engaging learning ecosystem for modern classrooms.

Conclusion

The UNIHIKER K10 is a modern, functional, and affordable alternative to Micro:bit — opening new possibilities for teachers and students in robotics and programming education.
It can be used as a standalone tool or combined with other DFRobot kits, making it an ideal choice for any modern STEM classroom.

PS. Testing of the UNIHIKER K10 was carried out over a period of three weeks during classroom sessions with students.
